Labels There are two ways to print labels. Individual Labels One way to print labels is one at a time using a special label printer. A dedicated label printer costs about $150-$200. It uses thermal printing technology, so it requires special labels made specifically for thermal printers. It plugs into the USB port and requires some installation. This is useful for single address labels for a patient or insurance carrier. Once you setup your label printer as a Windows printer, go to the Open Dental Printer Setup on the workstation where you will be printing labels. Set labels to print on your new printer with no prompt. To print a single label for a patient, use the Label button in the main Toolbar. There is a dropdown list that includes other label formats, labels for insurance Carriers, and labels for Referrals. Single labels may also be printed from the bottom of the Insurance Plan edit window. One other way to print a label for a carrier is from the Send Claims window. Highlight the claims you need to send, then click the label button in the toolbar. Single labels will be printed for those carriers. An appointment label for a single appointment can be printed by right clicking on an appointment and selecting Print Label. All labels can be customized using the Sheets feature. This includes alignment, sizing, wording, font size, static text, images, etc. Unlike some other sheet types, labels do not display on the screen before printing. They also do not get saved in the database. Sheets of Labels The other way to print labels is to purchase sheets of labels and print them in a laser or inkjet printer. The disadvantage to this method is that you always end up with leftover labels on the sheet making it hard to run through the printer again. So sheets of labels work best when you are printing large quantities of labels. Examples would be for Recall, Birthday cards, etc. The recall section has built-in functionality for printing sheets of labels, although most offices prefer laser postcards instead. There is also a Laser Labels feature which can print labels for patients, insurance companies, and birthdays. If you need sheets of labels for any other purpose, you have to create a report, export to a text file, and then merge into your own Word template.
