Prescriptions Prescriptions can be Set Up from the Main
Menu, under Lists | Prescriptions. After setting up prescriptions for a practice, there
will be a list of prescriptions to choose from when a patient needs a prescription. In
the Chart module,
click on the New Rx button at the top of the window
Select a prescription as a starting point by double clicking on an item or clicking OK. If none of the prescriptions on the list are close to your requirements, you can start with a blank prescription by clicking on the 'Blank' button. In any case, the prescription you create will not be linked to the one you select, but will be just a copy of it which you can change in any way you see fit. The following window will open:
The Controlled Substance box will cause the DEA# to be displayed as well as optionally send it to a separate Printer. A Pharmacy can be attached to a prescription if the prescription is called in. After any necessary modifications, click OK, and the prescription will be added to the patient record. It can be edited at any time by double clicking on the item in the Progress Notes in the Chart module. To print the prescription, click on the print button, and it will be sent to the default printer:
If you need to change the layout of the Rx, including the orientation or the way the generic and signature lines are handled, see Rx Setup. If you want to change which printer the Rx is sent to, and whether it prompts you for the printer, see Printer Setup. We are moving towards electronic prescriptions. Currently only 2% of US prescriptions are electronic. But that is set to change with the recently announced merger of SureScripts and RxHub, the nation's two leading e-Rx providers. The DEA also announced that they will soon allow issuing electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. A national standard for e-Rx is imminent.
